Bicknell's Thrush Tours

Mt. Washington Auto Road

1 Mount Washington Auto Road

Gorham, NH 03581

Bicknell’s Thrush is an extremely rare species with very limited breeding grounds. It is the rarest and most secretive of the breeding thrushes in North America and it is the only bird whose breeding is restricted to the Northeastern part of the continent. They usually breed at higher elevations, normally nesting above 3,000 ft. The unique and harsh climate is just what the birds prefer due to the combination of low vegetation and abundant moisture. The Mt. Washington Auto Road offers you a rare opportunity to view these  obscure birds.

Our Bicknell’s Thrush Guided Tours leave early in the morning before the Mt. Washington Auto Road opens to the general public to insure there is as little additional noise or disturbance as possible. Our success rate at hearing and seeing this elusive thrush is quite good, but with the species in decline due to wintering habitat losses, there can be no guarantee of sightings.

Lodge to Hut: Mount Washington Hike and Overnight

AMC's Highland Center

Route 302

Bretton Woods, NH 03575

Join an AMC Outdoor Guide on an attempt to summit New England's highest peak, Mount Washington. At 6,288' the "rock pile" should be on everyone's bucket list. Often underestimated due to its low elevation for a summit above treeline, and it's relatively short mileage. This challenging hike may be difficult for some to accomplish in one day, so we will take advantage of Lakes of the Clouds Hut and spend the night, hiking back down the next day.

With an experienced AMC Outdoor Guide you'll hike at a moderate pace to Lakes of the Clouds via the Ammonoosuc Ravine trail. We'll stop at the hut for a rest and lunch. With lighter packs we'll continue up the 1.5 miles to the summit of Mount Washington. We'll explore the summit, take pictures on the "rock pile" and hike back down to the hut for the night. After a well-deserved dinner and evening program we'll take to our bunks for the night.

The next day we will hike back down the Jewell Trail to a van that will transport us back to the Highland Center at Crawford Notch.

This trip involves difficult hiking on steep, rocky terrain. Weather can change quickly and become quite cold and windy above treeline. Participants should be good hiking shape, have proper hiking boots and clothing and be prepared for an alpine adventure!

There is no guarantee the group will reach the summit. AMC Guides will decide if a summit attempt can be made based on weather and other safety conditions.

Wilderness First Responder

Joe Dodge Lodge in Pinkham Notch

361 Rte. 16

Gorham, NH 03581

Wilderness First Responder: This 72-hour course uses the principles of long-term patient care, improvised resources, and varying environmental conditions as the framework for responding to medical incidents in remote settings. Lecture, hands-on practice, and simulated rescues emphasize injury prevention and decision making in emergencies. Course graduates will receive CPR and Wilderness First Responder certificates. The WFR is the most widely accepted standard in wilderness medical care for professional outdoor leaders including mountain and river guides, wilderness trip leaders, camp and outing club leaders, rangers-anyone who is responsible for the safety and care of a group of people in the backcountry. This course takes an in-depth look at the underlying physiology of common and uncommon emergencies that you might encounter in the backcountry. It goes well beyond the WFA by taking a more detailed look at the mechanisms of injuries and illnesses - trauma, environmental issues like hypothermia, heat illnesses, high-altitude disorders - and explores the treatment of other, less common, life-threatening problems like head and chest trauma and acute abdominal illnesses and injuries as well as blood-borne pathogens and infectious diseases. Long-term care, decision-making, organizing a rescue team and improvised rescues are covered in-depth. Includes CPR certification Program Highlights: •Comprehensive and in-depth look at the standards and skills of dealing with: Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies and Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies. •Coverage of topics is much more extensive than two-day WFA courses with hands-on practice •Nationally recognized certification for 3 years

Outdoor Skills: 4,000-Footers (Mount Jefferson)

AMC Highland Center

Rte. 302

Bretton Woods, NH 03575

The 4000 Footer series is designed for active, fit participants interested in summiting some 4000+ foot peaks in the White Mountains. Participants may be after the 48 peaks or just interested in some moderately challenging hiking in the White Mountains with a group. The program will commence Saturday morning with a welcome session where you will meet and greet other group members and guides and go over the day's route. Our professional guides will cover what to expect during the hike including terrain, trail conditions and weather, hiking safety, a recommended gear list, leave no trace, and more. Additionally, during the hike, guides will point out interesting flora/fauna along the way. The group will attempt to hike at least one 4000 footer, but actual hiking destinations may vary based on weather and trail conditions. This attempt of Mt. Jefferson, via the Caps Ridge Trail is a challenging 4000 footer hike, made slighter easier by the high elevation start. The Caps Ridge trail climbs over steep, rocky terrain for 2.5 miles, gaining 2700 feet in elevation. Round trip 5.0 miles, 5-7 hours. There is no guarantee participants will reach the summit. AMC Guides will set a turn around time, summiting will be based on the ability of the group, trail conditions and the weather.

Sunrise Drives & Guided Sunrise Tours

Mt. Washington Auto Road

1 Mount Washington Auto Road

Gorham, NH 03581

The Mt. Washington Auto Road opens early on three Sundays every summer, allowing guests to drive themselves to the summit of Mount Washington to view the sunrise from the highest peak in the Northeast.

Due to the popularity of these sunrise opportunities, we recommend not waiting until the last minute to arrive as you may spend time waiting at the Toll House due to traffic.

The State Park building on the summit will be open with limited food service on all three of these mornings.

GUIDED SUNRISE TOURS

Experience a sunrise on Mt. Washington from the comfort of a Mt. Washington Stage Coach.

Our experienced tour guides or "stage drivers" as we call them, will drive you up the Mt. Washington Auto Road for a chance to watch the sun rise. We leave promptly from the base lodge and will not hold back the trip as we need to keep a tight schedule throughout the day for all our guests.

Our drivers know the prime spots to view, have access to safe “VIP” parking where other cars would not be able to park and will tell their tales on the ascent and descent. Even if we don't actually get to the see the sun rise, you can be sure the early morning lighting on the mountains will make for incredible and unforgettable scenes. Although you are riding in a heated van, you should dress warm as you will have an opportunity to get out of the stage van for pictures and to experience the weather on Mt. Washington.
