Arts Jubilee: Piano Men - A Tribute to Elton & Billy

Cranmore Mountain Resort

1 Skimobile Rd.

North Conway, NH 03860

Arts Jubilee presents Piano Men—The Music of Elton John and Billy Joel—on Thursday, August 1st at 7 PM!

Elton John and Billy Joel have combined to sell over 350 Million records worldwide. For four decades they have been a large part of the musical landscape, topping the album charts and playing to sold out audiences while continuing to receive heavy airplay on classic rock radio. Since 1994 these two legendary performers have regularly been joining forces selling out their worldwide Face-to-Face tours.

“Piano Men – The Music of Elton and Billy” is a tribute to the amazing songs of Billy Joel and Elton John. This concert combines a four piece pop group featuring Joe Boucher on piano and vocals playing with an orchestra with arrangements by Christopher Eastburn. Rarely have these songs ever been heard performed live in this way as Elton and Billy themselves have only on a few occasions performed with orchestras.

The music of “Piano Men” concentrates heavily on the recordings by Elton and Billy during their 70’s heyday when their many hit albums featured lush orchestrations. The concert opens with Billy Joel’s thrilling “Prelude / Angry Young Man” and works it’s way through a veritable hit parade alternating songs between the two composers. Norman NG- The Norman Magic Experience

Denmark Arts Center

50 W Main St, Denmark, ME 04022

August 2, 7pm

If you missed Norman’s performance, last summer, now you have a chance at redemption. Magic is returning to Denmark with The Norman MAGIC Experience! Norman is known for bringing a fresh and dynamic energy to his shows. He views his show as a conversation with an audience rather than a performance for them. He involves the audience in ways no other performer does. He gets the audience to react in ways they never thought they could. He swings stuff, smashes stuff, and makes hundreds of people suspend their disbelief with every show.

Norman Ng (Pronounced “ing”) has been performing his exciting and unique brand of magic throughout North America for over 24 years. He has performed for millions of people live, on TV and on the internet. His show has been featured in 48 US States, Canada, and on the TV Show, Penn and Teller Fool Us on the CW Network.

Norman has also gained national recognition in the magic and performing arts community. In 2011 he was named “America’s Best Variety Act,” by Campus Activities Magazine.

Michael Trautman- King Pong's Ping Pong Rodeo

Denmark Arts Center

50 West Main Street
Denmark, ME 04022 United States

August 9, 7pm

Michael Trautman’s King Pong’s Ping Pong Rodeo is a truly unique variety show. Using his vast array of talents and skills, Michael, aka KING PONG, performs Magic, Juggling, Audience Participation, and the only target-shooting, ping-pong-spitting act in the world. When he was a young man, Michael lacked athletic ability, but he had a ping-pong table in his basement which led to his earliest success as the ping-pong champion of his high school gym class. His life-long love affair with the ubiquitous bouncing ball began then, and has now blossomed into a full blown obsession. Michael has decided that his artistic media is the tiny plastic orb. He has dedicated himself to discovering as many uses for it as can be created. KING PONG’S PING PONG RODEO only shows you those ideas which have been proven noteworthy. There are MANY other possibilities that have been explored, rejected, or are not yet suitable for public consumption. Don’t worry, he will share those when they are ready. KING PONG, it’s not what you would expect-orate.

Michael Trautman is recognized as one of the leading Variety Artists in the world. Since 1977 he has been touring and performing around the world, including appearances in 48 States, 9 Canadian Provinces, tours of Japan, Korea, China, France, Italy, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, and Central and South America.

Lobby and concessions open at 6:30 PM. Performance at 7:00pm

Denmark, ME 04022 United States

August 10, 9am-12pm

August 17, 9am-12pm

This course will introduce students to a traditional layered approach to oil painting. Jon will use modern materials to bring students step by step through a painting process employed by masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Ruisdael,. Students will learn important technical rules for archival permanence, from beginning surface preparation to the final varnish, as well as some color theory and helpful time saving tricks. At the beginning of each class Jon will demonstrate all that will be covered for that day. Students will finish the class with their own completed painting and a good understanding of how to use this technique for their own personal expression. (Advanced)

JON ALLAN MARSHALL
Born in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1964 and educated at the Massachusetts College of Art, Mr. Marshall works primarily in oils in the “classical tradition” inspired by 17th century Dutch landscape, still life, and portrait painters. His mastery of landscape painting unfurled after his move to Maine nearly 30 years ago to areas close to mountains and seacoast where he receives constant inspiration for his work.

Recognized for his ability at an early age, Marshall was one of the youngest ever Copley Master honored by Boston’s Copley Society of Art. Recently he received the Alden Bryan Memorial Award for traditional landscape in oil from the CSA.

A serious and productive artist, Marshall’s works are widely exhibited throughout the United States from Brunswick to Boston, New York City to Santa Fe.

Arts Jubilee: Barnes, Gordy & Walsh

Cranmore Mountain Resort

1 Skimobile Rd.

North Conway, NH 03860

Arts Jubilee presents Barnes, Gordy & Walsh on Thursday, August 15th at 7:00 PM!

In the world of bluegrass and folk, where the collaborative possibilities are endless, what draws some musicians together in formal collaborations is hard to pinpoint. For Joe K. Walsh, Grant Gordy, and Danny Barnes—a newly formed bi-coastal trio—curiosity is the rule, and tunes are just a starting point. For three musicians who have vibrant solo careers, as well as multifaceted musical collaborations under their belts, the trio has sparked a new level of creative inspiration, a venue to push and pull, learning and speaking with one another through improvisation.

The trio is anchored by banjo player and singer/songwriter Danny Barnes. Barnes is best known as the frontman of the Bad Livers, for his collaborations with Dave Matthews and Bill Frisell, and as the 2015 winner of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. He is an innovative banjo player and songwriter originally from Texas whose solo album “Pizza Box”, garnered him a sort of cult following, and led Sam Bush to describe him as “The Great American Un-Sung Hero."

Gordy and Walsh come from a more jazz and swing influenced background, having first bonded over their mutual obsession with learning David Grisman solos. Growing up in Illinois and later Minnesota, Walsh first established himself on the East Coast as the co-founder of progressive bluegrass band Joy Kills Sorrow, and as a long time member of The Gibson Brothers. He went on to become a faculty member at The Berklee College of Music, and launch a solo career with his albums Sweet Loam and Borderland.

Gordy, who is originally from Colorado and now lives in Brooklyn, went from being a fan of David Grisman, to playing in his band. Having spent six years in the David Grisman Quintet, Gordy released a self titled solo album to in 2010 to critical acclaim, and has been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition, Tiny Desk Concerts, and All Things Considered, as well as The Fretboard Journal, Acoustic Guitar Magazine, and Flatpicking Guitar Magazine. Darol Anger, with whom Gordy has collaborated frequently, describes his playing as containing “Kaleidoscopic excellence, startling emotion, and personal revelation”.

Work Trucks

Denmark Arts Center

50 W Main St,

Denmark, ME 04022

Brendan Lake began writing music while sailing in his schooner to far off places around the globe. He landed in Sacramento, where he worked with Sal Valentino until eventually returning home to his roots in Woolwich, Maine. Brendan has now partnered with Chris Lannon, who is a multi-string player, engineer, and producer with many credits including producing Carly Simon. Brackett H. Clark is his other partner, a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, engineer, and owner of Rising River Records. Brackett previously toured nationally with the California-based jam-rock bands “Transcendental Hayride” and “The Free Range Chickens”.

Together the trio form “The Work Trucks”, performing an eclectic mix of originals and covers, which they enhance with their own country-grunge, rock-jam style twists. The debut release of “Fishin’ Boat” by “The Work Trucks” features a collection of Brendan Lake originals, with soulful and unvarnished lyrics, memorable melodies, and captivating instrumental arrangements that will soon have the listener deeply engaged with the music.

Sunrise Drives & Guided Sunrise Tours

Mt. Washington Auto Road

1 Mount Washington Auto Road

Gorham, NH 03581

The Mt. Washington Auto Road opens early on three Sundays every summer, allowing guests to drive themselves to the summit of Mount Washington to view the sunrise from the highest peak in the Northeast.

Due to the popularity of these sunrise opportunities, we recommend not waiting until the last minute to arrive as you may spend time waiting at the Toll House due to traffic.

The State Park building on the summit will be open with limited food service on all three of these mornings.

GUIDED SUNRISE TOURS

Experience a sunrise on Mt. Washington from the comfort of a Mt. Washington Stage Coach.

Our experienced tour guides or "stage drivers" as we call them, will drive you up the Mt. Washington Auto Road for a chance to watch the sun rise. We leave promptly from the base lodge and will not hold back the trip as we need to keep a tight schedule throughout the day for all our guests.

Our drivers know the prime spots to view, have access to safe “VIP” parking where other cars would not be able to park and will tell their tales on the ascent and descent. Even if we don't actually get to the see the sun rise, you can be sure the early morning lighting on the mountains will make for incredible and unforgettable scenes. Although you are riding in a heated van, you should dress warm as you will have an opportunity to get out of the stage van for pictures and to experience the weather on Mt. Washington.

Figures of Speech- Jester Kings of Java

Denmark Arts Center

50 W Main St,

Denmark, ME 04022

American audiences are in for an exotic treat with Figures of Speech Theatre production of “Jester Kings of Java”. Gorgeous hand-crafted puppets made from gilded water buffalo hide portray the heroes, villains, and lovers from the ancient Ramayana, who dance across the eight-foot wide shadow screen to the mesmerizing sound of Indonesian gamelan music.

The story follows King Rama, who wants to marry Princess Sinta. But Sinta is in no mood for romance, because an evil giant has dog-napped her precious pup, Furri-Furri! All is in chaos, for there can be no harmony in the Kingdom when the King’s heart is not at peace. To restore equilibrium and win Sinta’s heart, Rama enlists the help of his overly chatty servant Gareng, Hanuman the White Monkey, a giant Garuda Bird, and even the heavenly lord Bathara Guru! Wild battles, strange adventures, and outrageous humor promise to entertain audiences of all ages.

Figures of Speech Theatre Director of Education Ian Bannon assumes the traditional role of the dalang, or puppeteer, animating a wide array of characters on their whirlwind quest through this one-man show. The performance features museum-quality authentic Indonesian puppets generously donated by Mari Hook of Denmark, Maine, as well as a few surprising contemporary additions.

Figures of Speech Theatre was founded in 1982 to explore the interplay of puppets, actors, shadows, music, movement, and masks. The company has performed throughout Japan, North and South America and Europe with performances which are enjoyed equally by adults and young people. Figures of Speech Theatre is a four-time recipient of the coveted UNIMA Citation of Excellence, the “Oscar” of American puppet theatre.
