Black Cat Road

Denmark Arts Center

50 West Main Street
Denmark, ME 04022 United States

July 20, 7pm

Black Cat Road is a group of five musically inclined people, each dorky but adorable in their own special way. They tell corny jokes in between playing classic and original songs described as funky, soulful, emotional blues & roots music. Overall these musicians make the room ROCK!

REVIEW FROM JOS VERHAGEN www.bluesmagazine.nl

If you believe in black cats, walk under ladders, or stronger, Voodoo, then you’re good at Black Cat Road. This American company brings swamp rock & blues, funk, soulful, emotional, rootsy, raw as they say. And after listening to this cd I can confirm this, it’s funky it’s rootsy, it’s sixties. One take no dubs, that’s how it sounds.

Black Cat Road consists of Steve Bailey on guitar and vocals, Jessie Mae Hines, vocals and percussion, Kate Seavey, on bass and vocals, Don Reed on keys and percussion, Chris Hartogh on drums

Check out their CD Crow Stew a nice arrival, Jessie Mae Hines sings raw here, her voice has something mystical something compelling. Mystical and compelling is also Faith And Ammunition, rootsy beginnings, mysterious text about a (her) grandmother, subtle accordion work, beautiful bass solo.

Black Coat Road really comes into its own in the slower songs such as the subdued Rock Salt And Nails. It starts with only the vocals of Jessie Mae Hines, supported by an organ, the subtle guitar and then the transition to a slow dark solo. In the intriguing Coal Mine, Jessie Mae sounds like she has just crawled out of the coal mine. A compelling song with a nice bass loop and a fine guitar solo. The slow dragging Rain Pushing, of the same sheet and suit, Kate Seavey is here again with her strong driving bass work. With Eleanor they throw out another mysterious song.

After this mid- and low-tempo work they build with the funky Talk Is Cheap and the title track Black Cat Road to the end. That ending is a slow blues, Damned, with Jessie Mea Hines in the lead. She sings here at her best, all nicely colored by the Hammond by Don Reed and the guitar playing by Steve Bailey.

This is what makes Black Cat Road so beautiful.

Arts Jubilee: Duke Robillard Band

Cranmore Mountain Resort

1 Skimobile Rd.

North Conway, NH 03860

Arts Jubilee presents the Duke Robillard Band on Thursday, July 25th at 7 PM!

Duke and his band have been thrilling audiences world-wide for over three decades. Whether it's a song, a style, an idiom, or an image, Duke Robillard will render it with mastery, power, nuance, and an unerring grasp of its essence.

Born Michael John Robillard on October 4, 1948, in Woonsocket, R.I., Duke has carved out one of blues' most illustrious legacies, while also trodding some lofty related territories as a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, bandleader, studio sideman, producer, label operator and educator. After showing an early affinity for music and guitar, he founded Roomful Of Blues with pianist Al Copley in Westerly, R.I., in 1967. By adding horns, Roomful announced itself emphatically as the prototypical jump blues band, and became a New England legend and a fixture beyond, as did Duke himself. By the time Duke left Roomful after a dozen years, he was firmly established in the upper echelon of contemporary blues guitarists.

Duke's resume is decorated with Grammy nominations, Handy Awards and Blues Music Awards, and other honors for his artistry, recordings and productions within the United States and internationally. Learn more at: www.dukerobillard.com.

Brackettology

Denmark Arts Center

50 West Main Street
Denmark, ME 04022 United States

July 27, 7pm

Brackett H. Clark, a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, engineer, and owner of Rising River Records, creates an evening with an eclectic mix of originals and rag jazz. Soulful, melodic, and memorable.

Brackett, who spent summers in Maine growing up, moved back to Maine in 2010 from Sonoma, Calif. In Sonoma, Clark had started his recording studio called Rising River Records that he is currently in the process of re-establishing in Denmark. Brackett sang at former President Richard Nixon’s funeral — both were fellow graduates of Whittier College. His band Transcendental Hayride opened for the Grateful Dead. You could say he knows a good thing when he hears it.

Brackett started classical piano at the age of 4 at Eastman School in Rochester NY.. Through the many years there have been a few bands; The Free Range Chickens, Transcendental Hayride, and Work Trucks, who played recently at the DAC. The Work Trucks released their first record in 2015, Fishin’ Boat.

Brackett opened Rising River Records studio after having opened The Void record studio in the 90s during his Free Range Chicken time. Brackett Clark has worked with Loney Jordan, WAR and Tommy Chong of Chech and Chong.

Chris Mullins of Javalina Records will be opening for Brackett on the banjo. More information on Chris soon to come.

Paddle the rivers and climb the mountains with families in the beautiful White Mountains! We've merged two or your favorite offerings- paddling and hiking to our backcountry huts. We'll paddle on the beautiful Androscoggin River where wildlife and scenic vistas abound. The next day we'll hike into the boreal forest to Carter Notch Hut (3.8 miles on way) and spend our third and final night. We'll look for constellations and listen for owls and frogs. After a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast we'll hike down and recount our adventures with our new best friends! Recommended for 9 years and up.

Sunrise Drives & Guided Sunrise Tours

Mt. Washington Auto Road

1 Mount Washington Auto Road

Gorham, NH 03581

The Mt. Washington Auto Road opens early on three Sundays every summer, allowing guests to drive themselves to the summit of Mount Washington to view the sunrise from the highest peak in the Northeast.

Due to the popularity of these sunrise opportunities, we recommend not waiting until the last minute to arrive as you may spend time waiting at the Toll House due to traffic.

The State Park building on the summit will be open with limited food service on all three of these mornings.

GUIDED SUNRISE TOURS

Experience a sunrise on Mt. Washington from the comfort of a Mt. Washington Stage Coach.

Our experienced tour guides or "stage drivers" as we call them, will drive you up the Mt. Washington Auto Road for a chance to watch the sun rise. We leave promptly from the base lodge and will not hold back the trip as we need to keep a tight schedule throughout the day for all our guests.

Our drivers know the prime spots to view, have access to safe “VIP” parking where other cars would not be able to park and will tell their tales on the ascent and descent. Even if we don't actually get to the see the sun rise, you can be sure the early morning lighting on the mountains will make for incredible and unforgettable scenes. Although you are riding in a heated van, you should dress warm as you will have an opportunity to get out of the stage van for pictures and to experience the weather on Mt. Washington.
