Met Opera Live in HD: The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess

The Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center

18 Bradley Street

Fryeburg, ME 04037

The Met Opera Live in HD series presents The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess at 1:00 pm. Porgy and Bess returns to the Met for the first time since 1990, in a new production directed by James Robinson in his company debut. America’s “folk opera,” as the 1935 creators described it, tells the story of disabled beggar Porgy, sung by Eric Owens, and his love for the drug-addicted Bess, portrayed by Angel Blue. David Robertson conducts a stellar cast that also includes Donovan Singletary as fisherman Jake, Golda Schultz as his wife Clara, Latonia Moore as the bereaved widow Serena, Frederick Ballentine as drug dealer Sportin’ Life, Alfred Walker as the brutal stevedore Crown, and Denyce Graves as Maria, town matriarch and operator of the local cook-shop. Infused with the timeless melodies of the much-loved classics “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” “Bess, You Is My Woman Now,” “I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin,” and “My Man’s Gone Now,” the new co-production with English National Opera and Dutch National Opera was hailed as a triumph at its premiere in London earlier this year.

The Odd Couple at M&D at the Historic Eastern Slope Inn Playhouse

M&D at the Historic Eastern Slope Inn Playhouse
2760 White Mountain Hwy, North Conway, NH 03860

Felix Ungar, a neurotic, neat freak news writer, is thrown out by his wife, and moves in with his friend Oscar Madison, a slovenly sportswriter. Despite Oscar’s problems – careless spending, excessive gambling, a poorly kept house filled with spoiled food – he seems to enjoy life. Felix, however, seems utterly incapable of enjoying anything and only finds purpose in pointing out his own and other people’s mistakes and foibles. Even when he tries to do so in a gentle and constructive way, his corrections and suggestions prove extremely annoying to those around him. Oscar, his closest friend, feels compelled to throw him out after only a brief time together, though he quickly realizes that Felix has had a positive effect on him. Performances are at 7:30pm Thursday through Saturday and Sundays at 3:30pm.  Tickets are $25.

February EcoForum: Trout Stream Restoration
Thursday, February 13, 12-1pm
Nature Learning Center, Albany

Streams and riparian areas are dynamic, and change dramatically over decades and

Streams and riparian areas are dynamic, and change dramatically over decades and centuries. Research in the last thirty years has shed light on the interconnected nature of streams and riparian areas, documenting that riparian zones are indeed an integral part of stream ecosystems. Much of that research has demonstrated the importance of wood in streams to fish habitat and nutrient cycling, and emerging information on the role of light on the productivity of stream ecosystems. Come learn about research from New Hampshire and beyond on fish habitat and instream wood, and what we may expect in our streams in the coming decades as forests age. As well as several stream restoration projects that use our knowledge of stream and riparian processes to help stream ecosystems become healthy again.

New Hampshire's Declining Bird Population

Tin Mountain Nature Learning Center, Albany

New Hampshire’s Declining Bird Population

Thursday, February 13, 7pm

Nature Learning Center, Albany

In September a study was published in the journal Science that highlighted an alarming decline in bird populations throughout North America. Similar studies in Europe have found the same. The report indicates a net population decline of 29% (about three billion birds) in North America since 1970. Yes that’s billion, with a “b.” Iain MacLeod, Executive Director of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, took a closer look at long term bird data in New Hampshire’s north country and found similar declines. Join Iain for an evening of exploring and explaining these trends and what they mean for the future of New Hampshire’s avian and greater wildlife populations.

Penguins & Polar Bears

Great Glen Trails

1 Mount Washington Auto Road

Gorham, NH 03581

Penguins and Polar Bears Nordic ski camp will focus on games and fun while teaching cross country ski basics for kids ages six to eleven years old.

Both Penguins (ages 6 to 8) and Polar Bears (ages 9 to 11) start off the camp with games that teach and test stopping abilities. Red Light, Green Light is a favorite that can be adapted to experienced skiers with the challenge of skiing backwards. Moose in the Trail gives further stopping practice while descending hills. Games of Predator and Prey played on one ski helps to equalize levels of skiing ability while providing the fun of a chase on skis. Capture the Flag, Ultimate Frisbee, and Flag Tag are other game possibilities.

The trails at Great Glen that wind through the meadows and forest will be explored. Ascending to the Great Angel Cabin, a log warming hut, is a significant ski goal for campers and is rewarded by a fast and turn-filled trip down the Dragon Corridor trail. Campers will also search for the locations of Trail Tracker critters. Of course, the camp wouldn't be complete without a few runs on the classic tubing hill.

Met Opera Live in HD: Agrippina

The Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center

18 Bradley Street

Fryeburg, ME 04037

The Met Opera Live in HD series presents Agrippina at 1:00 pm. In the Met’s first-ever performances of Agrippina, Handel’s satire of sex and power politics, Sir David McVicar reconceives a production he originally created for the Monnaie in Brussels in 2000, evoking a scandalous world in which the Roman Empire never fell but simply kept going right up to the present. Holding a distorted mirror to contemporary society (as Handel did when he staged this opera), the production presents the corrupt intrigues of the political classes, brought to life by Joyce DiDonato as the power-hungry empress Agrippina, Brenda Rae as the scheming, seductive Poppea, and Kate Lindsey as the feckless teenager Nerone. Iestyn Davies portrays the ambitious officer Ottone, and Matthew Rose is the emperor Claudius, on whose vacated throne Agrippina is determined to install her son. Renowned for his interpretations of the Baroque repertoire, Harry Bicket conducts.

$26-Adults, $23-Seniors, $18-Students
