'Night Mother

M&D at Eastern Slope Inn Playhouse
2760 White Mountain Highway
North Conway, NH 03860

Performances 7:30pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 3:30pm Sunday
‘Night Mother by Marsha Norman
Directed by Melissa O’Neil
The scene is the living room/kitchen of a small house on an isolated country road, which is shared by Jessie and her mother. Jessie’s father is dead; her loveless marriage ended in divorce; her absent son is a petty thief and ne’er-do-well; her last job didn’t work out and, in general, her life is stale and unprofitable. As the play begins Jessie asks for her father’s service revolver and calmly announces that she intends to kill herself. At first, her mother refuses to take her seriously, but as Jessie sets about tidying the house and making lists of things to be looked after, her sense of desperate helplessness begins to build. In the end, with the inexorability of genuine tragedy, she can only stand by, stunned and unbelieving, as Jessie quietly closes and locks her bedroom door and ends her profound unhappiness in one fatal, stunning and deeply disturbing moment—a moment never to be forgotten by those who have witnessed, and come to understand, her plight.

Portland Symphony Orchestra with Soprano Alyson Cambridge

The Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center

18 Bradley St.

Fryeburg, ME 04037

In celebration of the LHE/PAC's 10th Anniversary, the Portland Symphony Orchestra will be performing a very special concert with Broadway and Metropolitan Opera Soprano, Alyson Cambridge on Thursday, October 24th at 7:00 pm. Founded in 1923, the 'PSO' is widely regarded as one of the top symphony orchestras of its size in the country. Led by Music Director, Eckart Preu, the orchestra is comprised of 82 professional musicians, 40% of them residing in Maine and the rest coming from the greater Boston area, New Hampshire and Vermont. The PSO will be accompanied by guest vocalist Alyson Cambridge. Cambridge is currently starring in ROCKTOPIA on Broadway and has sung multiple lead roles with the Metropolitan Opera. She has been hailed by critics as "radiant, vocally assured, and artistically imaginative (Washington Post), noted for her "powerful, clear voice" (New York Times), and "revelatory, smoky readings" (Opera News). For over a decade, Cambridge has been performing at some of the world's most recognized opera houses and concert halls (Carnegie Hall, Los Angeles Opera, and London's Royal Albert Hall, to name a few). Alyson Cambridge has become "one of the most diverse and compelling vocal artists on the scene today." This concert is sponsored in part by the generosity of the Robert & Dorothy Goldberg Charitable Foundation.

The Norwegians

M&D at Eastern Slope Inn Playhouse
2760 White Mountain Highway
North Conway, NH 03860

Performances 7:30pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 3:30pm Sunday
The Norwegians by C. Denby Swanson; Directed by Rich Russo
A strong, bitter comedy about women scorned in Minnesota and the really, really nice gangsters—Norwegian hit men—they hire to whack their ex-boyfriends. Olive is a transplant from Texas and Betty is a transplant from Kentucky, but neither of them was prepared for the Norwegian men they would fall in love with there: the practical, warm, thoughtful, destructive, evil, jilting kind. If you’re a hit man in Minnesota, 83% of your clients want to take out their ex (oofda!). Betty has referred Olive to Gus and Tor, a partnership in the whacking business. What Tor doesn’t know is that Gus has been sleeping with the clients. What Olive doesn’t know is that Gus is Betty’s own ex, and she has already put out a hit on him with a Swiss firm. Can Betty call off the job in time to let Gus do his? Should she?
