History and Anecdotes: Willie Norton (one of the first Scottish golf professionals to journey to America), laid the first nine holes at Waumbek in 1895. America’s first “homegrown” golf professional, Arthur Fenn discovered the Waumbek in 1898. He extended the course to 18 holes, making it one of the longest courses in the United States at that time. The course attracted the first US Open Winner, Horace Rawlings in 1899. Mr. Rawlings fiddled with the course repeatedly during his six year stay at Waumbek. In the 1920’s, Ralph Barton put his own stamp on the old tester, making it well over 6,000 yards, as it is today. The mystique of the golf course is that 90% of the greens slope toward Cherry Mountain.
The Waumbek Golf Club offers the most scenic and picuresque views of any golf course in New England. Experience the splendor of New Hampshire's oldest 18-hole golf course (built in 1895!) and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Presidential Range on every hole.
