SECOND CLASS OF LEADERSHIP MWV GRADUATES
North Conway, NH -- The second Leadership Mount Washington Valley - Community Connections class graduated on June 24, 2009 at a ceremony attended by community and graduate family members in the Evergreen room at the King Pine Base Lodge at Purity Spring Resort. The program, designed to make young people in the Mount Washington Valley more productive citizens, employees and volunteers, empowered them with tools to make a difference in their community.
The intensive program was developed by the Mount Washington Valley Young Professionals with the help of the Mount Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Mount Washington Valley Economic Council. The program includes classes on local government, Roberts Rules of Order, community education, business networking and the responsibilities of boards and board memberships. This program aims to encourage young professionals and graduates to go deeper into personal community involvement.
Josh McAllister of Intervale, who graduated from the program, was looking for a way to better serve in his community. "I didn't know which nonprofits were around in the valley," he said. McAllister enrolled in the leadership program to "meet the people I needed to meet and learn the skills to help my community, other than just being a citizen and showing up to work each day". McAllister and 11 other graduates are now using the skills, networks and education they received through Leadership MWV in their communities. The leadership program helped McAllister "recognize where my talents were and how I can help MMV with them." He also spoke of his interest in working further with The Humane Society, where he already volunteers. The Humane Society has contacted him since graduating and is helping him become more involved, utilizing the skills he learned through the leadership program.
Each of the graduates, like McAllister, are going on to serve their communities in new and exciting ways. Enrollment for the next semester of Leadership MWV has started. The cost is $500 per student, but scholarships are available. The next semester will include nine, half-day workshops that start in January and end in June. There is an application process.
