Jackson Art Studio: Weekend with Matisse - Acrylic Painting Wrkshop

Dirt

M&D Playhouse is pleased to present Dirt, the sixth production in our 2017 series of eleven plays about relationships.  Written by Bruce Gooch, this drama explores the ravages of old age, painful extrangement among family members, and our lifelong connections to home and nature.  "When an estranged son retruns home and finds his father fighting to hold onto his mind, they are thrust into a struggle to control their land and the memories it holds.  Dirt explores how we forge our identities through our connections to our home, to our past, and to each other." roguemachinetheater.com

This production is directed by Eric Jordan.

Dirt is presented June 22 - July 2, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM with matinees Sundays at 4:00 PM at Your Theatre, Willow Common, 1857 White Mountain Highway, North Conway.

To reserve seats please visit our wwebsite at www.mdplayhouse.com or call (603) 733-5275.

Enjoy food and beverages from our Culture Cafe during the performance.  The Cafe opens 45 minutes prior to the performance with lilght snacks, coffee, soft drinks, wine, beer and liquors available.

Here's what reviewers elsewhere have said about Dirt:

"Dirt is an extremely interesting play; a fine work filled with poetic imagery, expressing the grandeur, beauty, and mystery of the circles of life and death, nature, and man's place in the world.  An estranged son returns home to aid his mentally declining father - a farmer fixated on his land, his need to work, and his identity inseparable from the regular changing seasons and nature's inevitable flow around him. Dirt...offers a serious contemplation on each of us trudging toward our own end."                                   stagehappenings.com

"It's a very primal play about growth and death, the cycles of land and building relationships."         dcnews.com

Where's Waldo?

FIND WALDO ALL OVER TOWN IN THE MONTH OF JULY!

The Find Waldo Local Campaign begins on Friday, July 1, at White Birch Books and other locally owned businesses across the nation. The event, sponsored by Candlewick Press, leads participants on a scavenger hunt through their towns’ business districts on a search for the elusive, red-and-white-stripe wearing picture book character.

This year, as in the past, shoppers who spot Waldo at participating local businesses in July become eligible for prizes throughout the month. The celebration then concludes with a closing ceremony or wrap-up party at White Birch Books at the end of the month. Participants will get a “bingo” card with all of the participating businesses listed and can get started from the bookstore on July 1st.

Once we get closer to July 1st we will start listing all of our fellow businesses on our website and FB page. We will be posting photos of where Waldo is in town on our website, FB and Twitter throughout the month. It’s a great way to visit some of our local businesses in a really fun way!

Where We Spend Shapes Where We Live—CHOOSE LOCAL!

A TRIBUTE TO THE BEACH BOYS   ~ featuring The Beach Bums

The "Beach Party", the cars, the sun,  surfin, the endless summer . . .  This is what The Beach Boys music is.  They have been the California ambassadors,  everywhere on the planet for the last five decades. The goal of the show is to  recreate the magic and the essence of the 60's   on the California beaches. "To say they nailed The Beach Boys harmonies  would be an understatement."

Mystery Book Club

White Birch Books Mystery Book Club

The Mystery Book Club meets at White Birch Books on the second Thursday of every month. A small group, discussion books range from historical mysteries to contemporary thrillers. Books are usually picked a couple months in advance, but sometimes the group goes crazy and lines up books for several months. As with all of our groups, the Mystery Book Club is open to anyone interested and can be a great place to meet fellow readers. We’ve seen wonderful friendships form and grow while discussing murder and mayhem – as it should be.

Author Evening with Mike Dickerman

White Birch Books in North Conway Village

Author Presentation with NH Author Mike Dickerman

Tuesday, July 25, 5 p.m.

Join us at the bookstore for an early evening presentation and book signing with NH Author Mike Dickerman, who will be discussing his newest book, MOUNT WASHINGTON: Narratives and Perspectives and signing copies. Make an evening of it and head out to dinner at one of the The Valley Originals restaurants after the presentation!

For two centuries, Mount Washington has been the object of countless writers' wonder and fascination. In this volume, more than twenty previously written pieces inspired by New England's highest peak have been carefully selected, and collectively these cover nearly every aspect of the mountain's storied past. Tag along on early explorations of the White Mountains and its fabled Presidential Range. Follow the history of the nation's first mountain-climbing train and witness many of Mount Washington's tales of human tragedies. Editor and area historian Mike Dickerman explores the captivating history of one of the Granite State's most remarkable places.

Mike Dickerman is a longtime northern New Hampshire resident who regularly writes, publishes and distributes North Country and White Mountains books through his own publishing company, Bondcliff Books. For more than twenty-five years, his popular hiking column, "The Beaten Path," appeared regularly in newspapers across the Granite State. He has authored or edited numerous books, including White Mountains Hiking History, Stories from the White Mountains and The Life of James Everell Henry, and was a co-editor of the award-winning anthology Beyond the Notches: Stories of Place in New Hampshire's North Country and the twenty-ninth edition of the AMC White Mountain Guide.

Jackson Art Studio: Traditional Portrait Painting w/ Ian Torney

with Ian Torney

In this weekend workshop, students will learn traditional portrait painting techniques in oils utilizing a classicist palette.  Without modernist colors the classicist painters of the Renaissance relied on tone over hue and chiaroscuro technique to create the illusion of three-dimensional form.  We will work initially in value to create a grisaille composition of a traditional three-quarter self-portrait view, and then expand our limited palette utilizing traditional hues to create a finished self-portrait painting.  Classicist portrait examples such as Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” Vermeer’s “Girl With A Pearl Earring” or Rembrandt’s self-portraits will be discussed.  Participants will complete a self-portrait painting in this workshop.  Not recommended for beginners – participants should possess at least modest drawing abilities and some experience with painting. Friday night will be a painting demo and class will continue all day Saturday and Sunday. Students can pack lunch or can pick one up on the lunch break.
Fri., July 28, 6-8pm, Sat & Sun, July 29 & 30, 9am-4pm (one hr lunch break)

Pine Hill Walkabout--Easement Exploration Series

Saturday July 29th—9am-11:30am  –  Pine Hill — Conway, NH

Meet at the Smith-Eastman Boat Launch (behind the Conway Police Station)

We hope you have heard about our current land protection project: the Pine Hill Community Forest. This project represents the Land Trust’s largest and most complex project to date. The transaction involves two separately exceptional tracts held by the same family for 100 years. In partnership with Tin Mountain Conservation Center, USVLT plans to purchase the 436-acre Pine Hill parcel in Conway and the 93-acre Bald Hill parcel in Albany.  These parcels will be permanently protected from development and managed as working forests. USVLT will own the Pine Hill parcel “in fee” and Tin Mountain will own the Bald Hill parcel, subject to a conservation easement held by USVLT. Key conservation values of the parcel include 6,430 feet of the Conway Recreation Path with deeded public access; 125 acres of wetlands; 3,300 feet of frontage on the Saco River; and 2,600 feet of scenic, undeveloped frontage on NH Route 16 and US Route 302. For this installment of the Easement Exploration Series, we will head to the Pine Hill parcel to some of these conservation values firsthand. Local surveyor and Land Trust President, Doug Burnell, will lead the group and show us just how special this property really is.

Details and Directions:

9 am start time. This is a family-friendly event that is free and open to the public. Meet at the Smith-Eastman Boat Launch (behind the Conway Police Station) on Meeting House Hill Rd. Parking will be in the public lot but look for “Land Trust Event” signs for guidance. Bring water, bug spray, and sunscreen and wear sturdy shoes. Pets on leashes welcome. For questions or more details, please email info@usvlt.org or call the USVLT office at 603-356-9683.

The Find Waldo Local Campaign wrap-up party at White Birch Books will be held on Sunday, July 30 at 11 am. This year, as in the past, shoppers who spot Waldo at participating local owned businesses in July become eligible for prizes throughout the month. Participants will get a “bingo” card with all of the participating businesses listed and can get started from the bookstore on July 1st.

The event, sponsored by Candlewick Press, leads participants on a scavenger hunt through their towns’ business districts on a search for the elusive, red-and-white-stripe wearing picture book character.

Here is a list of our fellow businesses that are participating or just look for the White Mountain Independent blue flags while driving around the valley.
