Bradley Backstage: The Bradley Jazz Collective

The Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center's Bradley Backstage Concert Series presents The Bradley Jazz Collective at 7:30 pm. The band, comprised of Craig Bryan (drums), Al Hospers (bass), Mimi Rohlfing (vocals), Mike Sakash (saxophone), and Jed Wilson (piano) will be performing the music of Thelonious Monk in celebration of the year that would have marked his 100th birthday (2017). Monk was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. The late pianist wrote about 70 songs during his career—many of which have become standards, including the most recorded jazz composition of all time, "Round Midnight."

Bradley Backstage concerts flip the theater and seat the audience on stage with the performers, creating a much more intimate and unforgettable live concert experience.

$15-Adults, $5-Students (pre-order online at www.fryeburgacademy.org/pac, or call 207-935-9232). Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the show when the doors open at 6:30 pm). Located at 18 Bradley St. in Fryeburg, Maine.

Local Author Afternoon with Michael Wilson

Book Signing and Author Afternoon with Michael Wilson

Saturday, March 3 at 3pm

Michael Wilson will be at White Birch Books for a discussion and book signing of book 1 & 2 in his series, The Hunted Mage Trilogy that incorporates a blend of History, Fantasy and Ancient Finnish folklore.

Once upon a time…Words held more Power and dragons roamed the world.

For Eyulf, the youngest son of a minor lord, the opportunity to train with a Rune-Singer Mage was the chance of a lifetime. He is content…until he discovers a volume of Lost Words, powerful Runes forgotten through the ages. Corrupted by Magic he cannot control, things go wrong quickly.

Jaakko, a simple huntsman, returns to his home late one night to find his village destroyed by a creature out of legend. Obsessed with the monster and his desire for revenge, he spends fruitless years hunting the beast before he realizes that it toys with him and he lacks the Power to destroy it.

When Avitus, an officer aboard a Byzantine ship of war, learns that his captain’s orders are to sell their ship and abandon the crew in the far North, he finds himself a penniless outlander. When he finds work as Steward to a future king he feels all will be well...until the crippled Mage comes to court.

Aila, spurned by Eyulf in his quest for Power, has quite happily made a new life for herself without him. When he returns, and tries to claim her once more as his betrothed, her fear of the potent magic he wields keeps her from confiding in the few people she feels she can trust.

One by one, they are drawn into Eyulf's treachery.

Michael has been a writer since his early years and completed HUNTSMAN, Book One of The Hunted Mage Trilogy while living on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He has now returned to the White Mountains of NH to continue the story with his newly released Book Two: DAGGER. Michael lives in the Conway Area with his Lovely Bride and Daughter who assist me in my Quest for Powerful Words, and a parakeet named Yoshi…who does not.

Ski, Shoe & Fatbike to the Clouds

Now in our 21st year, this challenging event takes place at Great Glen Trails and the snow covered Mt. Washington Auto Road. Long referred to as “North America’s Toughest 10K”, the Ski, Shoe & Fatbike to the Clouds course has an average grade of 12% over the last 6K as you climb the final 2,200 vertical feet. While there will be competitors who are seeking to make or break a record, for others it is the ultimate way to personally test themselves in one of nature’s most spectacular environments.

After covering 4k on the Nordic system, racers will have the Mt. Washington Auto Road to themselves as remarkable views of the Presidential Range and beyond reveal themselves – if you can look up from your oxygen deprived state. On race day, there will be a mass start of cross country skiers at 10 am, followed by the snowshoe start at 10:05 am and Fatbikers at 10:10 am. Ski, Shoe & Fatbike to the Clouds is considered a true freestyle event, there will not be separate classes for classic and skate skiing.

Entry fee for 2018:

$35.00 (until 11:59pm Feb 28);

March 1-3 $45;

NO DAY-OF REGISTRATION.

The Internet Is Distract--OH LOOK A KITTEN!

Fryeburg Academy Theater presents their 2018 One Act Festival play, The Internet Is Distract--OH LOOK A KITTEN! Micah only has twenty minutes to finish her paper on The Great Gatsby. She just needs to check a few facts on the internet first. Unfortunately, the web is a nefariously wacky place where boxing cats, Facebook lurkers, and pig-throwing games threaten to take over Micah's schoolwork, or worse. Will she finish her paper and escape with her life before the school bell rings? A high-octane comedy that explores the rabbit hole of distraction we all go down everytime we go online. White Birch Books Mystery Book Club

The Mystery Book Club meets at White Birch Books on the second Thursday of every month. A small group, discussion books range from historical mysteries to contemporary thrillers. Books are usually picked a couple months in advance, but sometimes the group goes crazy and lines up books for several months. As with all of our groups, the Mystery Book Club is open to anyone interested and can be a great place to meet fellow readers. We’ve seen wonderful friendships form and grow while discussing murder and mayhem – as it should be.

Focus on PV’s: an In Depth Look at Electricity from the Sun

Tin Mountain Nature Learning Center on Bald Hill Road in Albany

Join the Tin Mountain Energy Team for their workshop, Focus on PVs: an In Depth Look at Electricity from the Sun, to discover why Solar PVs are rapidly growing in popularity in the Valley.  This comprehensive workshop will be held at the Tin Mountain Nature Learning Center on Bald Hill Road in Albany on Saturday, March 24 from 9 am to noon.  Presentations will be made by members of the Tin Mountain Energy Team and guest Ed Solar who specializes in Do-It-Yourself installation opportunities. Local solar installers will also be there to help answer specific questions.

Solar PhotoVoltaics have dropped in price almost 90% in the last decade while their electricity production has been increasing.  This workshop will seek to balance these factors with the 30% tariff recently imposed on foreign PV manufacturers.  Cost of the panels themselves is only one of the factors in determining the total cost of a solar electric installation.   Members will discuss other financial considerations including current state and federal incentives and rebates, and low interest green loans.

Workshop participants will learn how to determine from your monthly electric bill what you are currently using for energy (as opposed to other fees and taxes) and what it would take to reduce that portion of your bill to near zero using efficiency measures and solar.  Immediate savings on electricity can often cover low interest loans.  Learn how Net Metering provides credit for the energy you send back onto the utility grid during periods of high production or, alternatively, what it takes to live unconnected to the grid altogether.

As a homeowner, you want to be ready to discuss the elements of an appropriate system for your property.  We will look at how solar installers determine if your property is suitable for solar electricity production and the options for installing PV’s on your property, whether mounted on your roof or on the ground using fixed or tracking panels. Presenters will explain all the individual elements of an  installer or contractor’s quote.   You will learn how proper sizing of your system may allow for increased energy savings in home heating and transportation.

Ed Solar from the Berlin Area Energy initiative, a sister organization to the Tin Mountain Energy Team, will be returning to discuss Do-It-Yourself options.  Last year Ed helped Dave Bowles of Tamworth install his own system at almost half the cost.

We will also be presenting an overview of what’s new and coming in solar technology including battery storage, roof shingles, and automotive plug in stations.

There will be a $5 workshop fee. Light refreshments will be provided. Tours of the Tin Mountain roof top, ground mount and in-roof solar PV installations will be available following the program.

The Tin Mountain Nature Program Series is sponsored by L.L. Bean and the Bank of New Hampshire. Live Animal Program: Why Do Animals Do That?

Tin Mountain Conservation Center

Join Tin Mountain at 4pm on Saturday, March 24th for the following live animal program:

Why do animals throw up when they're not sick? Why do they gnaw on wood if they don't eat it? With a Squam Lakes Natural Science Center naturalist Tiggy Gillespie and three live animal ambassadors we'll explore some of wildlife’s unusual behaviors and reveal the benefits of these peculiar habits.

Margaret "Tiggy" Gillespie grew up in the Laurentian Mountains north of Montreal. She has a graduate degree in environmental education from Cornell University. Tiggy has taught as a Naturalist with Squam Lakes for over 30 years. In 2016 the Science Center published a selection of her nature writings in a book entitled, Nearer to Nature.

The mission of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is to advance understanding of ecology by exploring New Hampshire's natural world. Through spectacular live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, an informal public garden, and lake cruises, the Science Center has educated and enlightened visitors since 1966 about the importance of our natural world. The Science Center is the only institution accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in all of northern New England.

Fee: $5/member, $7/non-member, $12/family. Please register by calling 447-6991.
