Hiking the Scottish Kingdom of Fife and its Coastal Path

North Conway Library presents:

“Walking the Scottish Kingdom of Fife and its Coastal Path”

with Theo & Melanie Stibbons

Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 7 p.m.

Weather Discovery Center

The North Conway Public Library is pleased to invite you to the first event of the 2017 Thursday Night Program Series. Theo and Melanie Stibbons will share slides and stories from their hikes in the beautiful Scottish Kingdom of Fife and its Coastal Path on Thursday night, March 2, at 7 p.m. at the Weather Discovery Center on Main Street in North Conway Village.

The Fife Coastal Path is one of Scotland's Great Trails, Stretching for 117 miles, between Dundee in the north and Edinburgh in the South. This long distance footpath offers a wide range of walking experience from easy and level, to wild and demanding along the attractive Scottish coastline, through small fishing villages, along rugged cliffs, award winning beaches, internationally important estuaries, wildlife reserves, and historic sites.

The Stibbons will take the audience along 25 miles of the most easterly sections of the Fife Coastal Path including a visit to historic St Andrews with its world renowned golf course.

The presentation will also feature an inland visit to the small town of Falkland with its Royal Palace built by King James IV in the early 1500s which claims to have the oldest surviving tennis court in the world.   Mary, Queen of Scots played tennis on these courts and is reputed to have shocked her courtiers by wearing breeches when playing.

The Stibbons are retired High School teachers from the UK, who spend up to 6 months a year living in North Conway to enjoy skiing, hiking, cycling, and the outdoors in this area.

Some may well remember the Stibbons’ former presentations for the North Conway Library about other hiking trips in England and Wales, on canal cruises in England, and an East Indies sea trek. They have also been the featured speakers for several AMC International Dinner programs talking about their many travel adventures.

This event will be held at the Weather Discovery Center on Thursday, March 2 at 7 p.m., no reservations necessary. There will be time after the presentation for questions and discussion.  The program is free of charge, although donations to the Library are greatly appreciated.  Homemade cookies will be served and coffee is generously provided by Frontside Grind of North Conway.

For more information about the program, please visit www.northconwaylibrary.com, call the North Conway Library at 603-356-2961 or email info@northconwaylibrary.com .

Mystery Book Club

Whispers Beyond the Veil by Jessica Estevao

Thursday, March 9 at 7pm

The Mystery Book Club meets at White Birch Books on the second Thursday of every month. A small group, discussion books range from historical mysteries to contemporary thrillers. Books are usually picked a couple months in advance, but sometimes the group goes crazy and lines up books for several months. As with all of our groups, the Mystery Book Club is open to anyone interested and can be a great place to meet fellow readers. We’ve seen wonderful friendships form and grow while discussing murder and mayhem – as it should be.

We invite all Nordic skiers to be part of an epic, classic technique event to benefit the New England Ski Museum.

Staged between the historic Mount Washington Hotel and majestic Mount Washington, the Bretton Woods Nordic Marathon at Omni Mount Washington Resort has quickly become a North Country winter tradition.  This 42-kilometer, classic format, cross country ski race showcases one of the largest Nordic systems in the northeast.  In the tracks of the famed 1982 US National Championships and such legends as Bill Koch and Tim Caldwell, this race is steeped in history and Nordic skiing tradition. The course layout provides a challenge to experienced racers while making use of terrain that is accessible and enjoyable for skiers of all abilities.

Participants range in age from 11 to 83, with a two lap course and rest stations. The Bretton Woods Nordic Marathon is a great event for recreational and competitive skiers alike; there is also an option to ski on an untimed basis.

Youth event:  Vermonter Bill Koch won the first United States Olympic medal in cross country skiing and developed the Nordic skating technique.  The US youth league is known as the Bill Koch League (BKL). There are 2 children’s BKL events. Please see below for more information. Children may ski in the marathon or half-marathon (register as U23.)

Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Jr.

M&D Playhouse is pleased to present Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Jr., the third in our 2017 series of eleven plays about relationships. This musical is presented by our Theater Arts Studio students and is directed by Mary Bastoni-Rebmann.

Based on the original Broadway production that ran for 13 years and was nominated for nine Tony Awaards, and the Academy Award-winning motion picture, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Jr. is a fantastic adaptation of the story of transformation and tolerance. Music by Alan Menken. Lyrics by Howard Ashman & Tim Rice. Book by Linda Woolverton.

The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Jr. is presented Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, March 16 - April 1 at Your Theater, Willow Common, 1857 White Mountain Highway, North Conway. All performances begin at 7:30 PM.

To reserve seats please visit our website at www.mdplayhouse.com or call (603) 733-5275.

Enjoy food and beverages from our Culture Cafe during the performance. The Cafe opens 45 minutes prior to the performance with light snacks, coffee, soft drinks, wine, beer and liquors available.

Here's what reviewers elsewhere have said about Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Jr.

"Beauty and the Beast, Jr. is a fun outing for the whole family. As did the grandparents and children in the audience, you too will walk away signing 'Beauty and the Beast'"                                MD Theatre Guide

Cynthia's Challenge for Faith

2017 Cynthia’s Challenge 24hr Ski-a-Thon

FRIDAY, MARCH 17, 2017 - 4:00PM TO SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 2017 - 4:00PM

King Pine Ski Area at Purity Spring Resort is excited to announce the next beneficiary of Cynthia’s Challenge 24-Hour Ski-A-Thon to be held in East Madison, New Hampshire March 17-18, 2017. All funds raised with this year’s event will benefit Sanbornville, New Hampshire’s Faith Holt, an 11-year-old girl living with skeletal dysplasia, seizure disorder and Crane-Heise Syndrome. This year’s goal is to purchase Faith’s family a wheelchair accessible van.

Faith was born pre-maturely and spent her first one hundred days in a neonatal intensive care unit. The combination of skeletal dysplasia, seizure disorder and Crane-Heise Syndrome require Faith to wear a soft-shelled helmet because she does not have a cranial cap. Due to multiple surgeries and her daily seizures, she uses a wheelchair for her mobility. Faith is the daughter of Doug Holt, an Air Force Veteran who served in Desert Storm, and sister to older brothers, Sean (19), Devin (16) and Cody (12). Faith’s mother, Stephanie Holt, passed away when she was six-years-old. A wheelchair accessible van would be of incredible assistance to the Holt family to get Faith and his other children to their daily activities and appointments.

Now in its fourth year, Cynthia’s Challenge 24-Hour Ski-A-Thon has raised over $131,000 to benefit children and their families. Starting in 2014, Cynthia Verrill was the first benefactor and resulted in her name being used to name the event. $35,000 raised for Cynthia was used to provide a seizure detecting service dog. The second year, the event raised over $35,000 for Samantha Gillard who was in need of a wheel chair accessible van and the third year raised $61,000 for Kevin Dall to purchase a wheel chair accessible van.

Cynthia’s Challenge was created in an effort to ease the financial burden upon children and their families associated with specialty medical needs. King Pine Ski Area supports Cynthia’s Challenge with the support of local business and the surrounding community. Cynthia’s Challenge would not be possible without the generosity of major sponsors Atlas Fireworks, Bank of NH, Mad Cow Screen Printing, Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge, Thrivent Financial, Yankee Smokehouse & Pepsi Co.

Online donations are welcome and checks are also being accepted. For more information, please call Purity Spring Resort at 603-367-8896.
