Papermaker

M&D Playhouse is pleased to present The Papermaker, the eighth production in our 2017 series of eleven plays about relationships. Written by Maine author Monica Woods, "The Papermaker ...takes place during a months-long paper mill strike in...1980's...Maine, told through the eyes of a mill executive and the contrasting view of a family of millworkers.  The play examines the unraveling of a community and the breach of a core American contract."   bangordailynews.com

This production is directed by Richard Russo.

The Papermaker is presented Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays August 25 - September 9 at Your Theatre, Willow Common, 1857 White Mountain Highway, North Conway.  All performances begin at 7:30 PM

To reserve seats please visit our website at www.mdplayhouse.com or call (603) 733-5275.

Enjoy food and beverages from our Culture Cafe during the performance.  The Cafe opens 45 minutes prior to the performance with light snacks, coffee, soft drinks, wine, beer and liquors available.

Here's what reviewers elsewhere have said about The Papermaker:  "The two-act play is not a political diatribe but an examination of society then and now. 'I hope people may see themselves in thejourney of the two families. And have empathy for the human condition,' said Wood.  'For our friends, our enemies, everyone.'" bangordailynews.com

America Supports You Freedom Walk

The America Supports You Freedom Walk is a national tradition that calls on people to reflect on the lives lost on September 11, 2001, remember those who responded, honor our veterans past and present, and renew our commitment to freedom and the values of our country. Each year the number of walks held throughout the nation grows, as more people are moved to participate.

The tradition was born when Pentagon employees, seeking a way to honor the victims of the attack on the Pentagon and their families, and pay tribute to those who responded to that attack as well as those who serve, organized a walk from the Pentagon to the National Mall. Nearly 15,000 people took part. Now, America Supports You Freedom Walks are taking place in communities across the nation.

The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to participate in our solemn annual walk on September 11, 2017 at the Jackson Covered Bridge Route 16 side gathering at 5:00 PM. Antique cars, fire trucks, pets, kids on skate boards, motor cycles, people in or on any kind of transportation are welcome to join us. The walk will commence immediately following a few words from invited guests, a moment of silence, the Pledge of Allegiance and our National Anthem song.

Immediately following the walk the Shovel Handle Pub will open their doors to our Active Military, Police, Fire & Rescue Personnel for complimentary food (please have your ID). All others are invited to join in as well (food and libations priced accordingly).

Our Freedom is continuously challenged... as a Nation we look to those who are on the front lines to continue to keep safe our Freedom and although they do not expect anything for their Valor we OWE them a showing of our appreciation by standing with them of our Own Free Will! God Bless America! This is not nor will it ever be a platform for politics... it is, however a solemn walk of a United American People honored to show our support to our Military, Police, Fire & Rescue Personnel.

Happy Hour with Local Author Jean Webb

Wine & Cheese Happy Hour with Local Author Jean Webb

Tuesday, September 12, 5 p.m.

Please join us for a Mid-week afternoon Happy Hour to welcome the new novel A HEART OF STONE by Mt. Washington Valley author, Jean Webb. We’ll enjoy complimentary wine and cheese and get a chance to hear from the author herself.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

A HEART OF STONE is a riveting novel which tells the compelling story of two people who must overcome challenges and cross the sea to be together. The story first takes place in Scotland. Sean Wicklow arrives at the estate of his sister, Megan, and her husband Angus MacFarland to mend the breach in their relationship that has existed for many years. When Sean arrives, he finds that the MacFarland estate has been raided and devastated by outlaws, who have burned the manor house and town. They have left nothing behind but a small child, named Jane.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Growing up in Massachusetts, the American Revolution was always a part of Jean’s upbringing. Visits to the “Old North Bridge” and to the greens of both Concord and Lexington with their tributes to the heroes of the Revolution, were constant reminders of America’s past. Marrying an Air Force Officer and being a military wife for thirty years also impacted Jean’s experiences throughout life.

When Jean is not writing, she enjoys the winter sports New England offers, including downhill and cross-country skiing as well as spending time in Florida. In fact, you will not find her far from the golf course and enjoying time with her dear friends at the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Author Evening with Suzanne Bouffard

Author Evening with Suzanne Bouffard

Thursday, September 21, 6 p.m.

Join us for a conversation with New England Author, Suzanne Bouffard about her latest educational book, THE MOST IMPORTANT YEAR: Pre-Kindergarten and the Future of Our Children. We encourage teachers, educators, parents and everyone in the community to come and take part in what is sure to be an interesting and enlightening evening about the future of our children.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

An eye-opening look inside pre-K in America and what it will take to give all children the best start in school possible.

At the heart of this groundbreaking book are two urgent questions: What do our young children need in the earliest years of school, and how do we ensure that they all get it? Cutting-edge research has proven that early childhood education is crucial for all children to gain the academic and emotional skills they need to succeed later in life. Children who attend quality pre-K programs have a host of positive outcomes including better language, literacy, problem-solving and math skills down the line, and they have a leg up on what appears to be the most essential skill to develop at age four: strong self-control. But even with this overwhelming evidence, early childhood education is at a crossroads in America. We know that children can and do benefit, but we also know that too many of our littlest learners don't get that chance--millions of parents can't find spots for their children, or their preschoolers end up in poor quality programs.

With engrossing storytelling, journalist Suzanne Bouffard takes us inside some of the country's best pre-K classrooms to reveal the sometimes surprising ingredients that make them work--and to understand why some programs are doing the opposite of what is best for children. It also chronicles the stories of families and teachers from many backgrounds as they struggle to give their children a good start in school. This book is a call to arms when we are at a crucial moment, and perhaps on the verge of a missed opportunity: We now have the means and the will to have universal pre-kindergarten, but we are also in grave danger of not getting it right.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Suzanne Bouffard is a writer with a background in child development and education. She received her Ph.D. in developmental psychology from Duke University and has spent the past ten years conducting and writing about education research at Harvard University. Bouffard’s articles have appeared in The New York Times, Parents magazine online, Educational Leadership magazine, and The Harvard Education Letter, and she is the coauthor of Ready, Willing, and Able. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband and two children.

Author Afternoon with Casey Sherman

Author Presentation with Casey Sherman at White Birch Books

Friday, September 22 at 5 p.m.

Join us at the bookstore for an early evening presentation and book signing with Fryeburg Academy Graduate, Author Casey Sherman, who will be discussing his newest book, THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE: Pete Frates and the Fight against ALS  and signing copies. Make an evening of it and head out to dinner at one of the The Valley Originals restaurants after the presentation!

While everyone knows of the Ice Bucket Challenge, the viral craze that swept the nation in summer 2014, too few know the truly inspirational story behind it. Pete Frates was a man at war with his own body. A man whose love for others was unshakable. A man who refused to fight alone, and in so doing mobilized a global army to combat one of the most devastating diseases on earth: ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. When disease crippled Frates, the former Boston College baseball star turned tragedy into inspiration. Pete’s story is a testament to the power of love, the steadfastness of family, the generosity of strangers, and the compassion of crowds.

Casey Sherman is a New York Times Bestselling Author of ten books including The Finest Hours (now a major motion picture starring Casey Affleck & Chris Pine) and Boston Strong (the basis for the new film Patriots Day starring Mark Wahlberg).
Sherman is also the author of Search for the Strangler, Animal, Bad Blood, Black Irish, Black Dragon and the forthcoming Above & Beyond and The Ice Bucket Challenge.
Sherman is a contributing writer for Esquire and FoxNews.com and has appeared as a guest an analyst on more than 100 television news programs.
Sherman is a graduate of Barnstable High School (Cape Cod), Fryeburg Academy (Fryeburg, Me.) and Boston University.

Half of the authors’ proceeds will go to the Frates family.

UNDER THE (BOOK) COVERS: An Evening with a Children’s Author Alicia Potter

Wednesday, September 27 at 6 pm

White Birch Books, North Conway Village

Alicia Potter will read from her wonderful children’s books and talk about what she does, how she does it -- and why: her research, her reading and writing habits, and what it’s like to write for children. Come to listen, talk, ask questions – and then share what you learn with the kids in your life, at home or at school!

This program, sponsored by White Birch Books, is part of a 6-day residency supported in part by the New England States Touring Program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program and the six New England state arts agencies, including the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts.

The Last Romance

M&D Playhouse is pleased to present the comedy The Last Romance, by Joe DiPietro, the ninth production in our 2017 series of eleven plays about relationships.  A crush can make you feel young again--even a widower named Ralph.  On an ordinary day in a routine life, Ralph decides to take a different path on his daily walk--one that leads him to an unexpected second chance at love.  Relying on a renewed boyish charm, Ralph attempts to woo the elegant, but distant, Carol. Defying Carol's reticence--and his lonely sister's jealousy--Ralph embarks on the trip of a lifetime, and regains a happiness that seemed all but lost. The Last Romance is a heart-warming comedy about the transformative power of love.

This production is directed by Mary Bastoni-Rebmann.

The Last Romance is presented Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, September 28 - October 14 at Your Theatre, Willow Common, 1857 White Mountain Highway, North Conway. All performances begin at 7:30 PM.

Here's what reviewers elsewhere have said about The Last Romance:  "The play adroitly eplores relationships between men and women in their golden years, as well as how the invisible ties of family often tie our hearts harder and faster than any love affair.  A tale that mixes heartbreak with its humor and opera with laughter... For all the breezy throwaway jokes - and there is enough laughter to make even olde age seem pleasurable - the central message about seizing life with a passion comes through loud and clear."                 Naples News

Thursday Night Book Club

Thursday Night Book Club

White Birch Books Thursday Night Book Club

Our Thursday Night Book Club meets every fourth Thursday of the month and is open to any and all readers. Our discussions are good, varied and – for the most part – stay on point. But we have a lot of fun, too. Stop in, try us out, meet some new friends and read some great books.

Rabbit Cake by Annie Hartnett

Thursday, September 28, 7 p.m.

Elvis Babbitt has a head for the facts: she knows science proves yellow is the happiest color, she knows a healthy male giraffe weighs about 3,000 pounds, and she knows that the naked mole rat is the longest living rodent. She knows she should plan to grieve her mother, who has recently drowned while sleepwalking, for exactly eighteen months. But there are things Elvis doesn’t yet know—like how to keep her sister Lizzie from poisoning herself while sleep-eating or why her father has started wearing her mother's silk bathrobe around the house.
