The Last Romance

M&D Playhouse is pleased to present the comedy The Last Romance, by Joe DiPietro, the ninth production in our 2017 series of eleven plays about relationships.  A crush can make you feel young again--even a widower named Ralph.  On an ordinary day in a routine life, Ralph decides to take a different path on his daily walk--one that leads him to an unexpected second chance at love.  Relying on a renewed boyish charm, Ralph attempts to woo the elegant, but distant, Carol. Defying Carol's reticence--and his lonely sister's jealousy--Ralph embarks on the trip of a lifetime, and regains a happiness that seemed all but lost. The Last Romance is a heart-warming comedy about the transformative power of love.

This production is directed by Mary Bastoni-Rebmann.

The Last Romance is presented Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, September 28 - October 14 at Your Theatre, Willow Common, 1857 White Mountain Highway, North Conway. All performances begin at 7:30 PM.

To reserve seats please visit our website at www.mdplayhouse.com or call (603) 733-5275.

Enjoy food and beverages from our Culture Cafe during the performance.  The Cafe opens 45 minutes prior to the performance with light snacks, coffee, soft drinks, wine, beer and liquors available.

Here's what reviewers elsewhere have said about The Last Romance:  "The play adroitly eplores relationships between men and women in their golden years, as well as how the invisible ties of family often tie our hearts harder and faster than any love affair.  A tale that mixes heartbreak with its humor and opera with laughter... For all the breezy throwaway jokes - and there is enough laughter to make even olde age seem pleasurable - the central message about seizing life with a passion comes through loud and clear."                 Naples News

Memorial Hospital hosts public forum

Memorial Hospital will hold a public forum at the Red Jacket Inn & Conference Center on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 5:30pm, to discuss a possible reorganization of MaineHealth.

MaineHealth is a not-for-profit network of providers and healthcare organizations committed to the health and well-being of the communities and people it serves. Memorial Hospital has been a member of MaineHealth since 2013.

For the past nine months, the member organizations of MaineHealth have been in preliminary discussions about reorganizing themselves under a single board of trustees and combined financial structure. The purpose of the forum is to have a community conversation about the proposed unification.

A panel comprised of Memorial Hospital President and CEO Scott McKinnon, Memorial Hospital Board Chairperson Laura Jawitz, MaineHealth President William Caron and others will lead the forum. The panel will discuss what it considers to be the benefits of unification and will answer questions from the audience.

“The proposal under discussion would create a single, system-wide board of trustees for MaineHealth,” stated Jawitz. “It would also leave in place local boards that would retain significant responsibility for the hospital services and other care delivered locally. MaineHealth and Memorial Hospital are interested in hearing from members of the community before any decisions are made.”

Mystery Book Club

Mystery Book Club

White Birch Books Mystery Book Club

The Mystery Book Club meets at White Birch Books on the second Thursday of every month. A small group, discussion books range from historical mysteries to contemporary thrillers. Books are usually picked a couple months in advance, but sometimes the group goes crazy and lines up books for several months. As with all of our groups, the Mystery Book Club is open to anyone interested and can be a great place to meet fellow readers. We’ve seen wonderful friendships form and grow while discussing murder and mayhem – as it should be.

One in a Million Boy by Monica Wood

Thursday, October 12, 7 p.m.

We are pleased to announce that this year’s book for One Book One Valley will be One in a Million Boy by Monica Wood.

The story of your life never starts at the beginning. Don't they teach you anything at school?

So says 104-year-old Ona to the 11-year-old boy who's been sent to help her out every Saturday morning. As he refills the bird feeders and tidies the garden shed, Ona tells him about her long life, from first love to second chances. Soon she's confessing secrets she has kept hidden for decades.

One Saturday, the boy doesn't show up. Ona starts to think he's not so special after all, but then his father arrives on her doorstep, determined to finish his son's good deed. The boy's mother is not so far behind. Ona is set to discover that the world can surprise us at any age, and that sometimes sharing a loss is the only way to find ourselves again.

We will be reading and discussing this book for our October Mystery Book Group and encourage anyone in our Thursday Night Book Group to join us at the bookstore on October 12 for our discussion. We will all meet at Kennett High School on Thursday, October 26 at 7pm to hear author Monica Wood speak and answer questions, followed by a book signing. We hope you can attend.

WMMA presents BOLD RILEY

White Mountain Musical Arts presents the return performance of Bold Riley. Saturday, October 21st at 7 PM at First Church of Christ Congregational, North Conway.  Admission is a suggested donation of $10 and will benefit the WMMA and its many programs planned for 2017.

Bold Riley started as a simple music project among friends, but quickly gained momentum thanks to the group’s contagious enthusiasm and commitment to bringing joyful acoustic folk music to the greater community.

Comprised of members Erin Sampson, Michael Hayashida, John Gunn, Dennis Boyd and Julia Edwards who hail from all over southern Maine, the group is known for its soaring vocal harmonies and diverse instrumentation.

Fiddle, guitar, banjo, accordion, bass and an ever expanding list of percussion allow Bold Riley to provide a wide range of music to its listeners.

Members take turns singing lead, and songs range from classic folk favorites to unlikely covers to rousing originals.

With the release of their self-titled EP in 2015 and performances at Stone Mountain Arts Center, Common Ground Fair, and other local venues, Bold Riley is making a new and exuberant contribution to Maine’s folk music scene.

  • First Church of Christ Congregational is located on White Mountain Highway (Route 16/302)
is located across the street from Peach’s restaurant and is a handicap accessible venue with parking available behind the building

Thursday Night Book Club One Book One Valley

Thursday Night Book Club

White Birch Books Thursday Night Book Club

Our Thursday Night Book Club meets every fourth Thursday of the month and is open to any and all readers. Our discussions are good, varied and – for the most part – stay on point. But we have a lot of fun, too. Stop in, try us out, meet some new friends and read some great books.

One in a Million Boy by Monica Wood

Thursday, October 26, 7 p.m. at Kennett High School
