Holiday Cheer at Snowvillage Inn

Plan for Simple Holiday Cheer
Written by Kathy Bennett
Contact Snowvillage Inn, www.snowvillageinn.com

EATON, NH — Remember the years where the holidays seemed so much simpler? Days spent playing in freshly fallen snow, followed by warm fires in the fireplace shared with dear friends and family were the norm. Now, we seem to find ourselves consumed by finding the latest tech gadget, often rushing through the holidays, and missing out on the quality time spent in the company of our loved ones.

While the holidays may look a bit different this year, there is plenty of good old fashioned memory-making fun to be had, right here in New Hampshire. Consider a visit in December for a classic New England gathering experience to slow down, hit reset, and prepare for Christmas.

Bright Spots To Look Forward To

Quiet Time In A Serene Setting – Spend a morning exploring our quiet private trail system on snowshoes, and be greeted with the inn’s holiday decorations and cheer upon your return. Soothe your soul this season as you snuggle into one of our cozy guest rooms complete with your own fireplace or mountain view and luxurious amenities.

Fine Dining – Leave the cooking to us. Whether it’s fresh muffins and aromatic local coffee in the morning or the gourmet food expertly prepared for you in Max’s Restaurant and Pub for dinner, you can relax and treat yourself to nourishing meals amidst a stunning backdrop of nature.

Quintessential Local Holiday Shopping – If ever there was a year to ditch the trips to the big box stores, this would be it. If you’re looking to fill those stockings and space under the tree with high quality and meaningful gifts, the small independently owned shops in North Conway are the perfect places to visit. Whether you visit Zeb’s General Store, The Penguin Gallery, or The League of NH Craftsmen, you’re supporting locally owned businesses while gifting meaningful items. Local artisans are aplenty in these parts, so plan some time exploring the roads less traveled to explore galleries and shops off the beaten path.

Nostalgic Memories – What are the activities that get you into the holiday spirit? Is it sledding with your kids, exploring villages adorned with Christmas lights, or cutting down your very own Christmas tree? With opportunities to make your own wreath the Mt. Washington Valley is the perfect place to get in some Christmas Cheer.

The Smells and Tastes of the Holidays – Who can resist the smell of fresh-baked cookies? Giving or receiving, a festive tin of cookies are always an appreciated gift. Guests at the Snowvillage Inn will be treated to some of our favorite recipes to savor during your stay or bake when you get home.

This holiday season, we hope you let us help in making some lasting memories for your family. After all, it’s the time spent with others that matters the most. We’ve created a special package for you to help get you back to the basics.

While the Country Inns of the White Mountains have canceled their annual Inn to Inn Cookie Tour, Snowvillage Inn is pleased to offer guests a pre-holiday retreat to recreate some of what makes that event so special (complete with our favorite holiday cookies).

Grab Lunch Before You Hike!

Where do the hikers go? Beyond picking the perfect hiking trail – measuring it for elevation gain, mileage and a view worth the work, the next; most important part of the plan is where you’re going to grab lunch before you head out!

You want to make sure your sandwich is layered with veggies, fresh meats, homemade spreads and local cheeses, and hits “peak” flavor. You want to measure it for optimal energy output, taste and how well it will hold up in your backpack as you put in the miles!

We have you covered with some of the best lunch spots who specialize in lunch to go for those looking to spend a day in the great outdoors!

Bagels Plus: Using only the best ingredients, these guys make their bagels fresh every morning! Featuring over 20 different bagel flavors, PLUS, the infamous “Boissant” – a cross between a bagel and croissant, as well as gluten-free options. Grab a breakfast or lunch sandwich depending on what you’re craving, along with a coffee to go to start the hike and an ice cold beverage to end your hike with.

Big Dave’s Bagels: They’re not kidding with the word “big,” here. They’re sandwiches are unapologetically large and the flavor is in charge! Their mission is to provide the most consistently excellent breakfast, lunch and catering experience in the Mount Washington Valley. Period. They aren’t messing around. Whatever can be homemade in their buidling, is. From their bagels to their cream cheeses to their sandwiches – which you can watch them prepare in their open concept kitchen – to their MUST-HAVE “kweenies.”

These are a non-negotiable for your hike. Big Dave’s “kweenie’s” are like a croissant on steroids. Kouign-amann (“kween a-mahn”), is a Breton cake, described in the New York Times as “the fattiest pastry in all of Europe.” The name comes from the Breton language words for cake and butter, a word and ingredient that are both sacred at Big Dave’s.

Local Grocer: Leaders in everything local, all natural and organic and Local Grocer has a delicious and awesome take-out menu. Featuring options for the carnivore, the vegetarian and the vegan your entire hiking crew will be smiling with satisfied stomach after grabbing lunch here. Local Grocer offers local, organic and naturally raised meats, eggs, milk, cheese and produce, and you can grab an organic beer or wine to celebrate reaching the peak on your hike with!

Sweet Maple Cafe: Perfect for when you’re making an early start in the White Mountains and are coming in from the south! Located right in Conway, swing into Sweet Maple for breakfast and then grab a sandwich to go! Everything they make, they do so with love, and you can totally taste it! From their Pulled Pork Sandwich to their Italian Sub on Homemade Focaccia to their Hot Panini’s and homemade cookies, everything has Sweet Maple’s signature on it.

J-Town Deli: The crew at J-Town are pro’s at lunch to go. A valley favorite is the endearingly called the “# 2” and it’s made with roasted turkey, bacon, lettuce and tomato and a chipotle mayo. You don’t have to take our word for it, you should definitely order one for yourself – or any of J-Town’s other sandwiches. None will disappoint.

And for good measure, make sure you grab a bag of chips from J-Town’s grocery section and a few homemade cupcakes from their bakery! You’ll deserve them after your hike!

Maple Syrup in the Mt. Washington Valley

The great debate over real or imitation maple syrup is happening at breakfast tables around the world. And while this argument of preference may endure for years to come, when it comes to Maple Syrup, the folks of Mt. Washington Valley will enthusiastically agree, we only want the real thing.

Maple Sugaring in the Mt. Washington Valley is a point of pride in our part of New England. Maple Trees are one of the main architects of our fall foliage season in Mt. Washington Valley, gifting us with crimson red leaves. They also provide a free flow of sap in spring, which is then turned into the coveted Maple Syrup we have pledged our allegiance to. We have a lot to be thankful for when it comes to these deciduous trees.

And thankful we are. To show our gratitude, the Mt. Washington Valley offers maple themed activities, events, dining experiences and more to share the authenticity of this New England staple as well as educate the public on what it takes to cultivate Maple Syrup.

Below is a small sampling of maple themed ideas to plan around a getaway in Mt. Washington Valley this March.

Take a self-guided tour the Maple Storybook Trail which begins near the Sugar Shack in the 100 Acre Wood. Located in Intervale, NH, the Sugar Shack opens up to a trail network where you can snow-shoe, walk your dog, go for a peaceful walk or cross-country ski. As you explore the 100 Acre Wood, you’ll see a network of tubes that run between the Maple Trees. The sap that flows from each tree runs back to the sugar shack where it is boiled and processed into Maple Syrup.

Once you make your way back to the entrance of the wood, if there is steam rolling out of the Sugar Shack, step inside for a firsthand look of the historic and innovative process of turning sap into maple syrup. You’ll get to talk to the makers of the syrup and learn anecdotal facts about the love and care that goes into making this liquid gold. Group Educational Tours for all ages during Maple Season are available during mid-week. With a suggested donation of $25 per class/group, proceeds benefit the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation. Reservations for group tours are suggested. Please call 603-356-9980 to schedule.

Learn how to tap your own trees with Remick Farm in its Maple Syrup DIY class! Start out in its Sugarhouse where you will spend the day as a syrup maker’s apprentice. At the end of the day, you will leave with hands-on knowledge of how to produce your own maple syrup and a sample of the syrup you helped produce. In addition, participants will create maple treats while waiting for the sap to boil down. Tree identification, sap collection and storage, boiling and filtering and grading and regulations are all topics that are covered during this workshop. This is a great way to familiarize yourself with the process of making Maple Syrup.

Remick Farm also offers a NH Maple Weekend on March 21st and 22nd. The farm has also introduced a new series called “Young Farmers” which helps you and your child explore the seasons on the Remick farmstead through themed activities. Most lessons include time outside, a craft, and a story. On March 7th, the theme of the “Young Farmers” program is Maple Syrup. Participants will learn about the trees necessary for good maple syrup, learn how it is collected and made by completing a maze and enjoying a craft and story about the sugaring process.

Lodging in the Mt. Washington Valley also goes beyond just providing a comfortable bed to sleep in! They also offer Maple Syrup themed vacation packages! Each lodging property adds its own unique spin on its Maple themed getaways, but one thing is for sure, you’ll get an inside look at how maple syrup is made, a sampling of sweet treats, a special dining experience and more. Click here for a link to Maple Syrup themed vacation packages.

Also be sure to check out the Bed and Breakfasts Inn Mt. Washington, for a complete list of lodging properties participating in March Maple Madness getaways.

A trip to Mt. Washington Valley during maple season isn’t complete without taking some home with you! True New England made maple syrup is such a gift and a unique way to share your trip with loved ones. (But we won’t tell if you decide to keep the goodies all for yourself, either!)

A stop at Zeb’s General Store in North Conway offers the best array of New England made products, including maple syrup, maple candies, beverages, sauces and more! Soyfire Candle offers clean burning candles made with organic ingredients, including a maple scented line! Bavarian Chocolate Haus offers maple sweet treats and you can even watch the chocolatier hand-dip candies when you stop in the store! White Mountain Cupcakeryhas its own take on a maple themed cupcake and be sure to stop by the Mt. Washington Valley’s cafe’s for a take on a Maple Latte!

Bagels & more at Big Dave’s Bagels & Deli

We were heading to Portland, so we stopped at Big Dave’s Bagels & Deli for, what else, bagels! And, we’re so glad we did! We enjoyed a tasty bagel with lox and cream cheese. We’d love to go back, maybe even for lunch! We do love lunch (possibly burritos) at Big Dave’s.

Whether you live here or are just visiting,  North Conway and the Valley is home to great dining!

Enjoy dining at Red Fox Bar & Grille in Jackson

“Like dessert for dinner and dessert for dessert!”

That’s our thoughts on dinner at the Red Fox Bar & Grille in Jackson! When we went to this cozy, family-friendly, incredibly New England-y restaurant, we helped ourselves to a maple sausage pizza and then a cookie sundae.

And, we loved every bite of it!

Enjoy Snowvillage Inn’s Max’s Restaurant & Pub

We love the Snowvillage Inn and the food they serve at Max’s
Restaurant & Pub. When we visited recently and asked for their help to prepare a seder, they couldn’t Passover the request. Their talented kitchen staff rose to the occasion – they even made gefilte fish that had taste, that’s how good they are!
